MEGAPODAGRIONIDAE (Flatwings)

A. icteromelas

Identification Family represented by four species in Victoria. As the name suggests, these damselflies perch with their wings held flat. This is one of only two families of damselflies in Victoria that perch with wings open. The other are the Diphlebidae, though these look like small dragonflies, are bright blue and occur on rocks in fast flowing rivers, so they cannot really be confused for flatwings.

The commonest species, A. icteromelas can be found in almost any waterbody and individuals spend much time perched on bankside vegetation.
