CORDULEPHYIDAE (Shutwings)

Identification Family represented by just one species in Victoria: Cordulephya pygmaea

An autumn-emerging species on the wing between about March and June.

Seemingly locally common in appropriate habitat, but small and often overlooked. According to some accounts, breeds in still water areas in mountain streams with a high load of sediment and leaf litter but certainly more cosmopolitan than this. One sighting at Mont Morentcy (Ian Endersby pers comm) led us to check nearby areas and we quickly found a number on the Yarra at Candlebark Park / Westerfolds Park.
