Synthemis eustalacta - Swamp Tigertail


Male identification: Relatively heavily marked with twin small spots at the base, and larger spots at the centre of each abdominal segment. These get smaller towards the tail whilst segment 7 has a pair of larger spots. Yellow spots at the base of each wing.

Female identification: Markings not significantly different to male including bold spots on segment 7. Abdomen even thickness along its length, lacking any 'pinch-point' near the base.

Similar species: Unlikely to be confused with other species. The only Synthemid with large pale spots on segment 7, a significant distance from the tip of the tail.


Behaviour: Tends to fly relatively slowly, low over water. Regularly perches.


Distribution: Distributed at all altitudes but most common in alpine areas above about 1000m. Possible split-distribution a result of its preference for bogs and marshes.

Habitat: Bogs and marshes with low surrounding vegetation.


Status: Common and localised


Flight period: October to March.
