Pseudagrion aureofrons - Gold-fronted Riverdamsel


Male identification: A beautiful damselfly with a lightly blue ringed abdomen, terminating in a distinctive pale tip. The thorax sides are completely pale blue but the top of the thorax, the face and eyes are bright orange.

Female identification: Lacks bright colour of male, being predominantly dull greyish green on the thorax and eyes.

Similar species: Male unlike other species. Female could be confused with green form of female heterosticta but is smaller in size without obvious postocular spots.


Behaviour: No information at present


Distribution: Unknown. Records from far northwest Victoria and along the Yarra in Melbourne. Appears to be a lowland species occurring below 200m.

Habitat: Grassy margins of rivers and ditches


Status: Uncommon and localised.


Flight period: January to March
