Nannophlebia risi - Common Archtail


Male identification: Small yellow and black dragonfly with bright green eyes, superficially similar to a Gomphid. Thorax with three parallel yellow markings: one mid-dorsal line and antehumerals. Abdomen ringed with yellow markings and very thin. Characterstically held aloft and arched down towards the tip which is yellow.

Female identification: Females similar to males


Similar species: Cannot be mistaken for other Libellulids but superficially similar to Gomphids.


Behaviour: Relatively quick often flying sorties from perch positions on vegetation over water.


Distribution: At least one record in far north-east Victoria.

Habitat: Banks of rivers with relatively fast flowing water.


Status: Uncommon and localised


Flight period: Recorded once in January
