Distribution: Originally described from a since-lost male specimen from South Australia in 1857. Quite recently, Austroepigomphus larvae were collected and large dark Gomphid adults observed in Victoria. This was at Carrs Plain Road on the Richardson River near Rupanyup (just east of Horsham) in December 1993 and the Ovens River billabong at Peechalba, downstream of Wangaratta.
