Austrogomphus australis - Inland Hunter


Male identification: Diagnostic feature appears to be completely yellow abdominal segment 9-10, so tail has very distinct yellow tip. Intersegmental suture all black, so thorax side divided in two by a thick black line. Yellow mid-dorsal line on abdomen deom segment 2-7. Segment 8 with a small mid-dorsal spot.

Female identification: Likely to be similar to male with slightly subdued markings.


Similar species: Very similar to other Austrogomphids. Diagnostic feature includes the distinctly yellow-tipped tail and thick black diagonal line along the intersegmental suture.


Behaviour: No information at present


Distribution: Specimens from the Kiewa River, Murray River and Goulburn River, all in northern Victoria lowlands at altitudes <400m but mostly <200m. Its range extends east along the Murray about as far as Yarrawonga, where it is replaced by ochraceous.

Habitat: A species of mature inland rivers, such as the Murray River west from Yarrawonga.


Status: Common and localised
