Sperm Whales off Wollongong

Wollongong pelagic trip report (31 Aug 02)

INFORMATION

Sperm Whales are not uncommon in Australian waters but you would be surprised to see a live one near shore. They generally feed on squid in very deep water, which usually means 20-50km from the coast. In New Zealand Kaikoura, this deep water is very close in shore.

Identifying sperm whales is not difficult. They have a hump rather than a dorsal fin, and a habit of floating like a log (' logging') at the surface for several minutes between dives. Their backs are covered in a prune-like skin and they often, though not always, lift their tail flukes when diving.
