Common in large flocks at sea (group size range = 2 to 1000) mainly close to islands but also small flocks recorded with other terns feeding over the continental shelf neat Broome. Numbers of birds on Middle Island, Ashmore Reef were considered likely to exceed 15,000 birds. Large numbers were also seen feeding in an upwelling to the west of Ashmore Reef.
