AES was appointed to undertake
survey and assessment of marine mammals and little
penguins for an Environmental Effects Statement
concerning dredging of Port Phillip Bay. Data on
seasonal seabird and marine mammal
distribution was collected using standard
boat-based survey methods; densities mapped
and population estimates calculated. Data were
used to identify areas of high and low risk and to
quantify risk in the assessment. AES also
reviewed literature on the impacts of noise,
light, underwater turbidity, toxicants and
disturbance, presenting these to the EES Panel
Inquiry.
